Modern zoos have serious responsibilities towards conservation, research and environmental education, which can not be developed on an isolated manner. On the contrary, these responsibilities depend on the participation of many institutions, due to the complexity of these tasks, such as the conservation of our fauna and flora species, and the scientific information that needs to be obtained to support this goal.

To develop and maintain working relationships, the zoos and aquariums of Colombia created ACOPAZOA, a scientific, conservationist and cultural, non-profit association, with indefinite duration. ACOPAZOA was established to gather zoos, zoological parks, aquariums and aviaries which exist or may exist in the future in Colombia, and which comply with the objectives and the applying laws of the Association (Law 23 of 1973).

During the period 2011-2013, the Board of Directors is formed by the President, Rafel Torres, Director of Parque Jaime Duran, VicePresident Haydy Monsalve, Director of Fundacion Zoologica Santacruz, and Treasure Sandra Sarmiento, Coordinator of Zoologico Piscilago.
